The Las Vegas Raiders knew their defense needed an injection of talent in order to bring their unit to a respectable level, and they did their best to address that in the 2023 NFL Draft by taking Tyree Wilson No. 7 overall.

Wilson was well-regarded during the draft process for his strength and length, a workhorse when it comes to getting after the quarterback. While his final collegiate season was cut short due to a foot injury, Wilson put enough on tape to be taken in the top 10 of the draft.

The rookie edge rusher underwent season-ending foot surgery in November but then had a follow-up procedure in March. Although foot injuries can be red flags for teams, Wilson is expected to make a full recovery and be ready for the 2023 season.

The Raiders didn’t get much of a chance to see what Wilson could do as he recovered from the procedure, but the plan is for him to get some reps in during training camp via Vincent Bonsignore of Las Vegas Review-Journal:

That is the plan and expectation.

Las Vegas and its fans are anxious to see what Wilson looks like once he’s cleared to hit the field as the pass-rushing group could definitely use a boost. Maxx Crosby is about as reliable as it comes in the league, but the opposite side of him has left much to be desired.

Chandler Jones is expected to start alongside Crosby despite his underwhelming 2022 season, but Wilson could easily push the veteran for the spot once he’s healthy and gets acclimated. While Jones said he’s feeling much faster heading into the year, it’s already clear that Wilson is going to demand snaps.

For now, the Raiders are doing the smart thing and allowing the rookie to take his time getting 100 percent healthy. His reps in training camp will surely be limited, but it’ll be good to see him out there once the players report.

Maxx Crosby looking forward to being mentor for Tyree Wilson

Crosby has been the undisputed leader for the defense for a couple of years now and heading into 2023 has a larger responsibility to take in the younger players under his wing.

The All-Pro edge rusher has become one of the best at his position in the NFL and thus would serve as a great mentor for players on the team. With that in mind, Crosby has already singled out Wilson as someone he’d like to mentor and help develop.
